Taxiway

The taxiway is the link between the runway and gate and is as critical as any other function at the airport. Busy airports have high-speed taxiways which allow aircraft to leave the runway at higher speeds. This allows the incoming aircraft to reach the gate quicker, also permitting another aircraft to land in a shorter time frame. It also means that a departing aircraft can enter the runway for a quicker take-off, minimising or eliminating any delay times.
The right airport design means efficient operations which saves time and money, while reducing fuel burn and emissions. It is not always matter of building new runways, new terminals or employing new personnel – at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in Sweden, the number of arrivals increased from 60 to 72 per hour without any additional runway investment.
